New Competition for prose & poetry – $1000 in prizes!

by Catchfire on April 3, 2010

Catchfire Press is pleased to announce a new competition for prose and poetry,
Wood, Brick & Stone: The Making of the Hunter
Wood, brick and stone – basic building materials that help people make their mark upon our environment. Roads, bridges, jetties, dams, buildings where we live, work and worship. From the time the first stones are quarried or timber felled, there are stories – stories about bark humpies to modern skyscrapers and the people involved. Has a particular structure inspired you? Is there a building you love or hate? Send your stories and poems, fact or fiction, about how our constructions have affected the landscape of the Hunter. Catchfire Press invites you to write for possible inclusion in WOOD, BRICK & STONE, in the following categories:
• Prose (200 – 2500 word limit)
• Poetry (up to 100 lines)
In each category:
First place – $300
Second place – $200
Commendations will be awarded

Send your entries by 30 September 2010 with entry fee ($10.00 per entry) and completed entry form to:  WOOD, BRICK & STONE, Catchfire Press, PO Box 2101, DANGAR, NSW, 2309.

Hey guys,

When will this anthology be released?

Can’t wait!

Hi Tony,

We’re collating at the moment, then there’s the judging, then editing, then sourcing graphics, then layout, then printing. All up, I’d assume another 6 months.

Yes!

When will the competiton results be known?

Linda Visman February 2, 2011 at 4:23 am

I have heard nothing about the results of this competition, and wonder if you can tell me if and when the judging was completed and entrants notified. Thank you.

Could you please let me know when you expect the Anthology to be available – back in November 2010 you commented to Tony Rhombus that it might be another 6 months. I know there is a lot of work involved in putting these things together – I am wondering where you’re up to with it.

Hi Linda,

Sorry if we’ve already replied; sorry equally if we haven’t and I’ve only just discovered your message. There have been significant delays in publishing this volume because of illness and surgeries. We are trying to accelerate processes now; pieces are being edited and will go to layout within two or three weeks. The winners and commended have been chosen. We don’t alert people until the book is at the printers. There are several reasons for this but what it comes down to is protection of ourselves and our authors against charges of plagiarism, legal action for various reasons and quality concerns.

Hi Michael,

We’ve had significant delays; sorry about that. We’re now editing and expect everything to go to layout within a few weeks, and then have a launch in late October. As I expect you know, we’re all volunteers, which means that if people would like our books produced more quickly they have an easy solution – they can volunteer too!

Thank you – no pressure from me – just a gentle enquiry about where you are up to given your previous postings.

I’d like to buy a copy of the book Wood, Brick and Stone as I know it is now available, but cannot find any way to order it

Hi Patricia,

You can buy “Wood, Brick & Stone” at Maclean’s Booksellers in Beaumont Street, Hamilton, and at Mcdonald’s Bookstore in the Heritage Mall, High Street, Maitland. If that’s difficult one of our committee members (such as myself) will arrange it with you personally – contact us at catchfirepress@gmail.com.
